The Salvation Army of the Virginia Peninsula is striving to meet increased needs of our communities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As vulnerable members of the Virginia Peninsula and Gloucester communities suffer from layoffs and job interruptions, the Army is finding unique and innovative ways to increase distribution of emergency food, emergency utility assistance and emergency shelter. Service days for their emergency-food pantry have doubled, as clients suffer layoffs and job interruptions. Using a “drive-through food pantry” to maintain sufficient social distance between clients and staff, the Army is providing enough food for twelve days. The Senior Emergency Food Pantry is open as a drive-through Tuesdays-Thursdays where instead of “client choice,” seniors will receive pre-packaged food. The Army is also partnering with Volunteers of America to deliver food to multiple locations in Newport News daily since shelters and day centers have closed, along with many churches that have fed the needy. Emergency-utility assistance continues via phone and email and the Army has doubled the number of hotel stays provided, to assist those displaced from shelters. Resident church services, cancelled for the foreseeable future, have been temporarily replaced by delivering “Churches in a Box” to each congregant household. The Army’s Gloucester Service Center is continuing its emergency utility assistance via phone and email.
Captain Michael Good, commanding officer, states, “Christians have been handling pandemics for over 2000 years. Why? Quite simply, Jesus set the example. We are called to ‘do onto others as we would have them do onto us,’ and ‘to love our neighbor as ourselves” Those who would like to contribute to our efforts are invited to reach out to Captain Good at 757-838-4875, extension 103, or email@example.com.” To make a financial contribution, please use our website at http://virginiasalvationarmy.org/hamptonva/.
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight; while children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight, I’ll fight to the very end!”
William Booth, Salvation Army founder, May 1912
