The Salvation Army’s Family Services and Emergency Shelter serves families with children as well as single men and women in need of help during a time of crisis. The faith-based program offers a holistic approach to recovery, renewal and rehousing.
Harrisonburg is one of the the fastest growing cities in Virginia, and among Virginia’s 15 largest. Harrisonburg’s and Rockingham County’s low unemployment rate and quality of life draw people in search of employment. Some job seekers arrive without money or a place to stay. These individuals are referred to The Salvation Army for help.
Many of the shelter’s residents are local men, women and families who experience an expected emergency such as layoffs, illness, and other income disruptions find themselves homeless due to their limited income and lack of resources to carry them through their time of emergency. The Family Services and Emergency Shelter provides families and single adults with shelter and support to help them rebuild their lives, including basic and intensive case management, health and nutritional programs, and other community connections.
