The Harrisonburg Salvation Army’s Christmas in July
Organization Seeking Volunteers
(Harrisonburg Virginia, June 11, 2019) – The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers to ring the bell at their Christmas in July Campaign. Volunteers from the community will be staffing The Salvation Army kettles outside various local merchants starting this Saturday June 29th through Saturday July 6th. The annual Christmas in July Campaign is a week-long fundraising effort to fund the organization’s services during the summer. Without the support of volunteers to staff the kettles, The Salvation Army is unable to collect the funds that will support the important programs they provide to those in need in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
“With people on vacation, and traveling to visit friends and families, the summer months are the low point in our annual funding efforts,” says Ashley Gordon-Becker, the Director of development of the Harrisonburg Salvation Army. “Christmas in July allows our friends an opportunity to assist local low-income families across Harrisonburg and Rockingham County with a helping hand in their time of need. The Salvation Army is mindful that we serve those in need on behalf of our fellow neighbors. When we provide a homeless person with a bed, a family with food for the table, or someone funds to keep on their electricity, we are doing so on behalf of the community.”
While those seeking help remains strong over the summer period, July and August is the period when donations are at their low point in the year.
On average over the course of a year, The Salvation Army helps a person Harrisonburg/Rockingham person every 14 minutes. This summer The Salvation Army’s anticipates that its food pantry will aid 320 to 375 families each month, as well as housing 35 to 40 people each night in its homeless shelter, The Salvation Army’s Family Services and Emergency Shelter.
