On Wednesday, August 1 The Salvation Army and Hampton Roads partners WVEC-TV 13News, Chick-fil-A, Farm Fresh and Grand Furniture began The Write Stuff, a month long campaign to collect school supplies for The Salvation Army to distribute to children in need prior to them going back to school.
Distribution of the donated school supplies will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, August 29-31. Those seeking school supplies for their children can visit The Salvation Army during the hours of distribution and complete an application. Parents and guardians must bring with them picture ID, proof of income or public assistance, a birth certificate and social security card for each child ages 4-18. During distribution, The Salvation Army will also begin accepting application for Christmas assistance. Birth certificates and social security cards are for identification purposes only and confidential information will not be recorded and /or kept.
Throughout the month of August, the Hampton Roads community has the opportunity to donate new school supplies at local Chick-fil-A, Farm Fresh, and Grand Furniture locations more than 60 locations. Donated supplies may range from backpacks, notebook paper, pens, pencils and crayons to calculators, highlighters, index cards, rulers and pencil wallets; all the items needed to help children prepare for a successful school year.
In 2011, The Salvation Army served more than 1,400 area families and more than 3,200 children through The Write Stuff and in past years has served as many as 4,600 children across Hampton Roads.
