On Thursday, November 22, Thanksgiving Day, The Salvation Army will host and provide a Thanksgiving Day Community Meal at five locations across southside Hampton Roads.

The Thanksgiving Day Community Meal will be served from 10 AM to 1 PM at The Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps (2306 Airline Boulevard, Portsmouth), The Salvation Army Men’s Hope Center (203 West 19th Street, Norfolk), and The Salvation Army Norfolk Corps (5516 Raby Road, Norfolk). A Thanksgiving meal will also be served from the mobile kitchen at locations in Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. All are welcome at all locations.

“At a time of year when we give thanks, we are grateful to be able to serve those who may not be able to afford a traditional Thanksgiving meal,” said Captain Brett Meredith of The Salvation Army.

Generous support of the Thanksgiving Day Community Meal has come from Mattress Firm and Mattress Discounters whose employees donated funds to purchase 50 turkeys. Additional support will come from ECPI University, whose culinary school is preparing the turkeys, gravy and stuffing, Schaubach Companies of Virginia whose underwriting sponsorship of the Schaubach Golf Classic provided funds to purchase pies and casseroles, and Baker’s Crust who is preparing and donating green beans and mashed potatoes for the Thanksgiving Day Meal.

“We are thankful for businesses within our community who are willing to help us serve those in need with a plate of food,” said Captain Meredith. “The holidays are a time to serve with compassion while providing dignity to our neighbors in need.”

Individuals, families, civic groups, or churches wishing to support the Thanksgiving Day feeding program either as volunteers, through an in-kind donation, or monetary donations should visit SalvationArmyHRVA.org to learn more or call Chere’ Maxwell Flowers at (757) 543-8100.

The Salvation Army is also offering a mobile giving opportunity. The mobile component gives mobile users the ability to donate $5 via their mobile bill by texting SALHR to 80888 to and responding to the confirmation message with the word YES. Standard message and data rates may apply.
