National Salvation Army Week is May 13-19

May 13-19 The Salvation Army in Hampton Roads and across America will celebrate National Salvation Army Week as first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954.

On Thursday, May 16th, The Salvation Army will host an event for the homeless community at the Men’s Hope Center Shelter in downtown Norfolk. During the event The Salvation Army will provide food and toiletry items to homeless men and women to help combat the rising temperatures the summer months bring.

Also on May 16, The Salvation Army will announce the opening of a Men’s Transitional Housing program to be housed at the Men’s Hope Center Shelter. The 12 bed wing of the shelter will offer men the opportunity to stay up to 90 days, requiring them to obtain full-time employment, participate in case management, life skills training, substance abuse counseling, and financial management. The purpose of the program is to fill the gap between emergency shelter and permanent housing and is expected to serve nearly 50 men annually.

In 2012, The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command served more than 1,500 individuals through the Men’s Hope Center Shelter and more than 21,000 individuals through all social services programs while providing Christmas assistance to more than 42,500 individuals. Nationally, The Salvation Army served more than 30 million Americans in 2012.

During National Salvation Army week, The Salvation Army will continue its outreach to the Lexington Park community of Norfolk on Saturday, May 18. Beginning at 11 AM The Salvation Army will assist in cleaning up the neighborhood, serve meals from the mobile kitchen, offer games and activities for local youth, and offer prayer and ministry to the community.

During his presidency, Dwight D. Eisenhower stated, “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of all.”

Salvation Army Sees 77% Participation Rate Through 3 Days of Christmas Distribution

The Salvation Army Hampton Roads Area Command has completed three days of Christmas distribution from its Christmas Depot at 4725 Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach and served a total of 3,268 families over those three days, more than 9,400 are scheduled.

This year, thanks to the generous support of the Hampton Roads community, The Salvation Army is poised to serve more than 55,000 individuals across Hampton Roads during the Christmas season. The Christmas Depot, 4725 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, will serve 1,200 to 1,300 families a day seeking toys, clothing, and food.

Through the three days a of Christmas distribution to qualified and approved residents of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth, 13,029 individuals have been served. In 2011, a total of 29,864 individuals in those four cities received the benefits of Christmas assistance. Gifts of new clothing and toys are still being accepted at the Christmas Depot in Virginia Beach.

Through its partnerships with Mini Price Storage, the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots, and The Virginian Pilot Joy Fund, and WVEC-TV 13News, The Salvation Army is able to provide more than 20,000 southside children with toys this Christmas and more than 9,400 families with food. The Salvation Army’s partnership with WVEC-TV 13 on Angel Tree tags will provide many of the region’s 30,000 registered children with clothes this Christmas.

Through the three days of distribution to families in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth, the participation rate of registered families has been 77%. Families having missed their appointments over the three days have been fit-in to the distribution process and will continue to be fit-in as time and resources allow.

On the southside, distribution to registered families will run through Monday, December 17 from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the exception of closing at Noon at the final day and being closed on Sunday, December 16. On the peninsula, The Salvation Army will begin distribution on Monday, December 17 and conclude Friday, December 21 from its warehouse at 439 Oriana Road in Newport News.

The Salvation Army Begins 2012 Christmas Distribution

The Salvation Army Hampton Area Command opened the doors to its Christmas Depot on Monday, December 10 at 9:00 a.m. for distribution of toys, stockings, clothes, and food for families enrolled in the annual Christmas assistance program.

This year, thanks to the generous support of the Hampton Roads community, The Salvation Army is poised to serve more than 55,000 individuals across Hampton Roads during the Christmas season. The Christmas Depot, 4725 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, will serve 1,200 to 1,300 families a day seeking toys, clothing, and food.

Through the first day of distribution, 75% of the families registered for Christmas assistance visited the Christmas Depot to receive the gifts of toys, stockings, clothes, and food for their children and families. 2,088 children from 946 families received toys, 99.5% of those children also received gifts of clothing from the Angel Tree.

The Salvation Army’s partnership with WVEC-TV 13 on Angel Tree tags will provide many of the 30,000 children registered with clothes this Christmas.

During Christmas distribution in 2011, The Salvation Army swerved approximately 6,600 families, approximately 9,400 are scheduled to come through the Christmas Depot in Virginia Beach in 2012. This year, The Salvation Army will serve approximately 60 families every 15 minutes beginning at 9:00 a.m. and closing at 4:00 p.m.

Distribution to registered families will run from Monday, December 10 through Monday, December 17 from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Depot will be closed on Sunday, December 16. On the peninsula, The Salvation Army will begin distribution on Monday, December 17 and conclude Friday, December 21 from its warehouse at 439 Oriana Road in Newport News.
