Students Awarded Back-to-School Shopping Spree from Target and The Salvation Army

On Tuesday, July 16, more than 60 local students in need will have the opportunity to visit a Target store to purchase school supplies, clothing and other must-have necessities just in time for back-to-school. The Salvation Army and Target are helping 64 K-12 students across Hampton Roads gear up for the upcoming academic year with the Target School Spree. Each child, selected by The Salvation Army, will be awarded an $81 Target GiftCard to purchase much-needed back-to-school supplies. Additionally, each child will be paired with a volunteer chaperone for their fun day of back-to-school shopping.

Since 2009, Target has sponsored Target School Sprees to help prepare children for the first day of school. As part the Target School Spree program, Target has awarded The Salvation Army nationwide $1 million to cover Target GiftCards and transportation costs. . Nearly 500 Target stores will participate in the Target School Spree event between July 15 and August 15 in select regions across the country. Each $81 Target GiftCard awarded as part of the program will provide a child with the necessary supplies to go back to school in the fall, ready to learn. Through programs like the Target School Sprees, Target is on track to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015.

Hampton Roads Children Need Community’s Help Getting to Summer Camp

Hiking in the woods, making crafts, singing songs by the campfire − some of our fondest childhood memories come from summer camp but for at-risk children in Hampton Roads, these simple joys seem unattainable. These children instead spend their summer’s wandering the streets or hanging out with other idle kids, too often a recipe for trouble.

The Salvation Army can help struggling local families avoid this outcome for their children. Last year in the United States, thousands of children attended some 48 Salvation Army residential camps. “It’s an experience not to be missed,” says Captain Brett Meredith of The Salvation Army. “Time spent at camp can be a life-changing experience for kids. It can instill feelings of self-worth, open up the world and offer hope for the future.”

Captain Meredith reports that last summer the citizens of Hampton Roads gave the precious gift of camp to 100 local children, some of whom had never in their lives experienced being in a safe, loving environment 24 hours a day. Through these donations, underprivileged Hampton Roads children enjoyed weeklong camps where they played sports, swam, explored the outdoors and made crafts. And beyond the recreation, with the help of trained counselors they learned how to live together with a diverse group of neighbors, dealing with the troubling issues and concerns that challenge them in their daily lives.

The Salvation Army is currently seeking sponsorship for 200 children for summer camp 2013. “School will be ending soon,” Captain Meredith points out. “There are lots of spots left and not enough money to fill them. I pray the community will come through for these deserving kids. For many of them, it’s the highlight of the whole year.”

Beginning in June, The Salvation Army hosts fun, educational, and enriching youth summer camps at Camp Happyland in Richardsville, VA. Donor support makes it possible for families to send their children to these camps for a cost of just $50 to the family.

Community Challenge Update

During the first week of July, The Salvation Army offered the Community Challenge as a way for Hampton Roads corporations, businesses and organizations to get involved with The Salvation Army’s mission of providing human services to those in need. During JoKellthe Community Challenge partners competed against one another to raise the most money for The Salvation Army by ringing bells and promoting their own online red kettles.

Community Challenge partners JoKell, Checkered Flag, Northwestern Mutual and Stihl along with The Salvation Army Advisory Board and Women’s Auxiliary helped raise more than $7,000 towards the $10,000 goal that will help send at-risk youth to summer camps, provide food supplements to hungry families and provide cooling assistance to families on the verge of having their utilities disconnected as well as help sustain larger programs such as the Men’s Hope Center Shelter and women’s transitional housing program HOPE Village.

“We are most grateful for our faithful community partners who are helping us remind folks that there are many in need year round. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Captain Brett Meredith, Salvation Army Tidewater Area Commander.

The Salvation Army to Deploy Red Kettles

The Salvation Army Tidewater Area Command will put out its iconic red kettles for the first week of July in an effort to raise awareness of those who are most vulnerable in our community. Community partners such as Checkered Flag, JoKell and Northwestern Mutual will all participate in the Community Challenge, both ringing bells at local ABC and Harris Teeter stores and raising funds online through the Online Red Kettle at SalvationArmyHRVA.org.

“We are most grateful for our faithful community partners who are helping us remind folks that there are many in need year round. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Captain Brett Meredith, Salvation Army Tidewater Area Commander.

This summer The Salvation Army is sending at-risk children to safe, educational summer camps, providing cooling assistance to families on the verge having utilities disconnected, providing food supplements to more than 150 families a week, among other larger programs such as the Men’s Hope Center Shelter and Hope Village, women’s transitional housing center.

“When you give to The Salvation Army, your dollars will stay right here in Hampton Roads to fight poverty and serve suffering humanity,” said Captain Meredith.

This will be the fourth year that The Salvation Army Tidewater Area Command has deployed red kettles in the month of July. It is the first year of having support from community partners like Checkered Flag, JoKell and Northwestern Mutual.

Youth Shield Awards

On Wednesday, June 13, The Salvation Army Norfolk Corps celebrated the teenagers and young adults involved in Corps programming by hosting the inaugural Youth Shield Awards.

Annually The Salvation Army sends approximately 30 teens and young adults to Youth Councils, a leadership and spiritual development conference, at Youth Councils the Corps awards a single participant with an award. At the Youth Shield Awards, Stacey Adkins, Corps Youth Evangelism and Outreach Director, recognized teens in the categories of community service, spiritual growth and leadership.

“It’s always frustrating at Youth Councils that we have all these great kids and can only recognize one,” Adkins said. “The Youth Shield Awards is going to be a great annual event where we can really celebrate our teens and young adults for a variety of things.”

In addition to the awards, the event included a fashion show with items selected from Salvation Army Family Stores by Dawn Miller and modeled by the teens. The theme of the event was “Using Passion for Good” and included a panel discussion with members from the community who are all using their passions for good. The panel included Rae Pearson Benn (Mrs Virginia Beach 2011), David Ham (Reporter at WVEC-TV 13News), Dawn Miller (Realtor at Exit Realty) and Naoma Doriguzzi (Social Media Expert). The panel discussed topics such as how they use their passions for good, how teens can find their passions and some of the biggest dangers and temptations teenagers face, among others.

“I had a great time talking about using passion for good,” said Naoma. “We had an amazing panel; doing great things in the community.”

All food and items included in the fashion show were donated by Major Dewey Alderson at The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center and Family Store.

While a date for the 2013 Youth Shield Awards has not yet been set, it will likely be in mid-June.
