Service Opportunity: Red Kettle Bell Ringer Days and Times: November 8 – December 24 (except Sundays and Thanksgiving) Location: Various locations throughout Montgomery County Description: Ring the bell and spread holiday cheer while raising critical funds for The Salvation Army’s Montgomery County programs. Ring during three-hour shifts or adopt an entire day (eight hours) by challenging family members and friends to join you! Requirements: Volunteers must be 16 years old and be able to stand outside in winter weather for the shift. Volunteers should be friendly, greeting shoppers as they pass. Service Opportunity: Angel Tree Gift Sorting Dates and Times: December 8 – December 13 and December 15 – December 17, 9:00am – noon, 1:00pm – 4:00pm, 4:00pm – 6:00pm Location: The Salvation Army, 20021 Aircraft Drive, Germantown, MD Description: Assist in sorting toys and gifts for 1,300 Montgomery County children registered in the Angel Tree Program. Requirements: Volunteers must be able to lift light to medium weight packages and be able to walk extensively in the distribution area. Service Opportunity: Angel Tree Representative Dates and Times: November 28 – December 13, Monday – Saturday hours: noon – 4:00pm or 4:00pm – 8:00pm; Sunday hours: 2:00pm – 6:00pm Location: Center Court (by Santa’s workshop) inside Lakeforest Mall, 701 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD Description: Assist families and individuals as they select their Angel from the Lakeforest Mall Angel Tree; receive gifts from completed Angels for return to The Salvation Army center; answer questions regarding the program to shoppers. Requirements: Volunteers should be friendly and out-going as they help individuals select Angels. Volunteers must be detail-oriented. Service Opportunity: Angel Tree Gift Distribution Date and Times: Thursday, December 18, 9:00am – noon, noon – 3:00pm, 3:00 pm – 6:00pm Location: The Salvation Army, 20021 Aircraft Drive, Germantown, MD Description: Greet families and retrieve the labeled gift bags for each registered Angel Tree family. Requirements: Volunteers must be able to lift light to medium weight gift packages, be able to walk frequently, and possibly assist in carrying packages to the family’s car. Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities:
Position Title: Intake Assistant Schedule: Flexible, but prefer at least 1-2 days per week for at least one 3-hour shift each day: 9am-noon or 1pm-4pm, Monday-Friday. At least a 3-month commitment is required. Position Description: Help the social services staff fulfill the needs and requests of a high volume of clients. Answer phone calls, conduct brief intakes over the phone, screen clients and schedule client meetings with staff, if appropriate.
Position Title: Administrative Assistant Schedule: At least 3 hours per week. Position Description: Assist the case management staff with establishing a new filing system for client records, organizing the office space, copying client documents and greeting clients at the reception desk.
Position Title: Youth Program Assistant Schedule: Tuesdays, 5:30pm-7:30pm. A 6-month commitment is required. Position Description: Assist leaders in either a kindergarten, 1st-5th grade or 6th-12th grade class, where students participate in a variety of activities and games focused on the following themes: arts and crafts, outdoor living, family, culture, character-building, The Salvation Army beliefs, among other topics.
Position Title: Food Pantry Assistant Schedule: Fridays 1pm-4pm. A monthly or weekly commitment is required. Position Description: Help staff pick up food from local restaurants and stores, prepare grocery bags, greet food pantry guests, and help guests carry grocery bags to their cars. Requirements: Must be capable of lifting heavy items.
Position Title: Janitorial Assistant Schedule: Flexible Position Description: Help clean the offices, bathrooms and classrooms, and assist with minor maintenance repairs.
